Council ignores school’s concerns and rejects crossing

Despite concerns raised by Fircroft Primary School, governors, parents, elected councillors and Sadiq Khan MP, Wandsworth Council has ignored a petition calling for a zebra crossing outside the Tooting school.

The petition was handed to the council in February, after serious concerns were raised by the school and parents for the safety of children travelling to and from the school. The petition called for a zebra crossing on Glenburnie Road, a dangerous rat run in front of the school.

Since then the situation has worsened; as the already stretched lollipop patroller Pam has left her position and the council have failed to replace her.

The council’s Community Services Committee ignored calls for road safety action and rejected the crossing, on the basis of an officer’s report based on a traffic study completed over two days, just before half term.

They also rejected Cllr Leonie Cooper’s call for alternative measures including implementing an Active School Strategy, improving 20mph signage outside the school, building out kerbs to narrow the road to shorten the crossing distance, and /or more road studs to slow the traffic and improve parking enforcement in the area. Refusing to accept defeat, Cllr Cooper has called for the matter to be reconsidered at the next Full Council meeting on 15th October.

Sadiq Khan MP said,

“I share parents’ disappointment that the council chose to listen to a traffic study that was carried out over just two days, rather than the real concerns raised by local parents and residents who have to cross the road every day.

“Everyone involved in the campaign knows how dangerous Glenburnie Road can be and how much the crossing is needed, but it is incredibly frustrating that the council is refusing to listen.

“Local parents can be reassured that Labour councillors have not given up the fight, and will be calling for the decision to be reconsidered at the next full council meeting. In the meantime I will be working with the school and local parents to keep the pressure on the council and remind them that we won’t give up until the crossing is installed.”
