Sadness on the death of Bishop Hugh Montefiore

I was really sad to learn on Saturday of the death of Bishop Hugh Montefiore, who I first met personally when he chaired the final Hustings of the General Election campaign a couple of weeks ago. I commented on this blog what a wonderful and strong Chair he was on the night and how I revelled in his chastisement of my opponents for their failure to get to the point quick enough. Bishop Hugh Montefiore really was a great man. He died at the age of 85 after a brief illness. He was best known as a highly effective "Holy Warrior" for the Green Movement. He was a Trustee of Friends of the Earth for two decades and Chairman of the Group between 1992 and 1998. He became nationally known in 1978 when he was appointed Bishop of Birmingham and served the post for a decade. He lived in Wandsworth and died in St George's Hospital on Friday 16th May. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Sadiq
