On Thursday I met with Ectopic Pregnancy Trust to discuss their concerns around ectopic pregnanicie. Every year 32,000 women suffer from ectopic pregnancy. The Trust works to provide support and information to these women, as well as raising awareness about the condition. I am planning to visit St Georges Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit to see for myself the excellent work done locally in this area.
In the evening I attended the AGM of Furzedown ward Labour party. Furzedown Ward was one of only 2 wards in London where Labour made a gain from the Tories in the Council elections in May 2006. Cllr Judy Gasser, who is the newly elected Labour Councillor is doing a brilliant job assisiting Cllr John Farebrother in representing all of Furzedown's residents. Both are local and are showing the huge advantages local representation can bring.
On Friday I visited Green Mobile in Wandsworth. This local company is the UK's first environmentally friendly mobile tariff that donates to the Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth. Mobile handsets are designed for 5 years and this compnay encourages us to keep our phones longer as this is environmentally friendly. When you sign for Green Mobile they will donate £25 to FofE or the Woodlands Trust! You can find out more details by visiting www.greenmobile.co.uk.
In the afternoon I attended a meeting at Gatton Primary School in my capacity as Chair of Governors
On Saturday I joined Martin Linton MP, actress Prunella Scales and Wandsworth residents in a mock funeral outside Battersea Arts Centre. As I have written before, the Tory council have taken the disgraceful decision to cut the grant of BAC and start charging commercial rents to this superb local cultural asset. Our campaign continues to try and persuade the Tory Party locally and nationally of their folly. Further details can be found by going to the BAC website www.bac.org.uk. You can see a photo of our most recent campaigning by clicking HERE.
I had my usual surgery in Tooting Library.
In the evening I went to Tooting Leisure Centre to see an excellent performance by Tooting Gymnastics Club whose show included over 300 local children(including mine!). There were very many proud parents, carers, family and friends throughly impressed with the performance by all the children under the excellent coaching by the Club.
I also attended a memorial in honour of Mr S Stanislaus (MBE) at the South London Tamil Welfare Group. In my speech I referred to my fond memories of Mr Stanislaus who did so much for the Tamil community locally, nationally and in Sri Lanka. He was Chair of SLTWG for more than 12 years and under his Chairmanship the group went from strength to strength. The turnout was very impressive and a real tribute to this community volunteer.
On Sunday I joined the hard working Tooting ward Councillor Nick Bowes and many other members of our local action team canvassing in Tooting and addressing some of the issues raised by our constituents. There is real anger and concern at the Council for it's decision to close Wandsworth Museum and the Arts Centre. The Labour Group continue to work with local residents on this matter.
