Secretary of State for Transport Lord Andrew Adonis visited Earlsfield Station this week to celebrate an important milestone in Sadiq Khan’s campaign for improvements to Earlsfield Station.
With planning permission now submitted to Wandsworth Council, work to revamp the station and install new lifts will hopefully begin should planning permission be granted by Wandsworth Council’s Planning Application committee.
The £8 million refurbishment scheme will include:
• A new booking hall
• A wider/enhanced entrance and new frontage
• A new staircase, roof, lift and walkway to Platform 3
• New lift and walkway to Platforms 1 and 2
• New canopies on Platforms 2 and 3
• Additional ticket machines
As part of the improvements, work is already under way to extend the canopies on platforms 2 and 3 to provide further shelter in poor weather and reduce overcrowding under the canopies.
Sadiq Khan has been campaigning for improvements to Earlsfield Station since he was elected in 2005 as MP for Tooting.
This led to immediate improvements to the station improvements for passenger safety and security, a new disabled access point, improved ticketing facilities and some minor renovation works.
In 2007 Sadiq secured funding for lift access to Earlsfield Station, but it was apparent that nothing short of a complete refurbishment of the station would be needed in the short term, so Sadiq extended his campaign and successfully secured funding for the refurbishment work which will begin soon.
Lord Andrew Adonis said: “Good transport is central to the lives of Londoners and the City’s economic success.
“Labour has invested heavily in London’s transport infrastructure, modernising the Tube and expanding the East London line and the Docklands Light Railway. And Labour is the only party committed to Crossrail.
“Improvements to Earlsfield train station along with the millions of pounds that have been secured for future work will make a real difference to local people and businesses.
Sadiq Khan said: “I’m delighted we finally have the plans for the new lifts and new entrance, and that work can start soon.
“I hope Wandsworth Council will do the right thing for local residents and give the plans the go-ahead, so work can begin soon.”
"I have been incredibly frustrated by the delays to the improvements works and new lifts at Earlsfield Station, after securing the funding more than 3 years ago.
“We can at last see some light at the end of the tunnel with the extension of the canopy and the refurbishment and lift plans about to be submitted to Wandsworth Council for a major refurbishment of Earlsfield Station.
“Londoners have a clear choice to make in this general election – Labour who will secure the recovery and continue to invest in transport, including train stations like Earlsfield or the Tories who will wreck the recovery and cut services.
