Sadiq
Khan MP has published the results of his Springfield
Development survey.
The results have been
passed on to the Springfield Development Director, Andrew
Simpson and local residents who are campaigning to have the
current plans re-considered.
The
results
reveal the true extent of local opposition to plans for a
new development on the site of the Springfield Hospital in
Tooting.
Sadiq
began his survey in response to concerns expressed by local
residents about the lack of consultation by the developers,
on what is the biggest development to take place in Tooting
in over ten years.
Wandsworth Council also failed to carry
out any consultation of local residents.
Sadiq's Survey Results
Sadiq contacted over 3700 local households immediately
surrounding the Springfield Site, to inform them of the
plans and seek their views. Dozens of local residents
helped Sadiq deliver the survey.
More
than 300 local residents responded to the survey, which was
a far greater response than the response received by the
developers when they undertook their consultation.
Support for the development
The survey
revealed that:
-
only 4.3% of respondents supported the plans in their
current form;
-
38.9% of people did not support the plans at all; and
-
56.8% of respondents, had serious reservations about the
current plans.
Height of
buildings
A massive
72.4% of respondents wanted to limit the height of
the development to between 3 – 5 storeys –
clearly opposing the current plans for much taller buildings
of 12 stories to be included in the development.
1400 units is too many
The
existing plans also include proposals to build 1400 new
units on the site. The vast majority of respondents,
90.4% felt that the proposals included too many units.
Only 8.4% thought that 1400 units was about right and only
1.2% thought that it wasn’t enough.
What next?
It is
extremely important that local residents’ views are taken on
board, and these factors are considered, if these plans are
to make any progress.
At present
local opinion is firmly against these plans, and for good
reason.
So far Sadiq has managed to force the developers to delay
the planning application for this development.
Sadiq
will continue to work closely with local residents to ensure
that their views are heard and acted upon.
