Springfield University Hospital Development

Have your say!

South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust have laid out proposals to develop the 80 acre site at Springfield University Hospital. Having lived in this community all my life (for many years very close to Springfield Hospital) I understand the impact the development of the Hospital site could have on local residents.

I am carrying out my own consultation on their proposals and would like you to complete my survey to make sure I know your opinions so I can work effectively on your behalf.

You can download the survey HERE and post to my local Tooting office, 58 Trinity Road, Sw17 7RH.

The plans:

The Trust proposals say they plan to “open up the site to the local community whilst improving their mental health services.” The following developments are currently planned:

  • Housing: The Trust plan to create around 1400 new housing units both by converting some of the existing buildings and by erecting new ones. This will include a mixture of affordable housing and private units and will include:

    • Around 70 single and semi-detached houses and 175 town houses.

    • Around 1150 apartments. 300 of these will be in the converted buildings and the others will be in new apartment blocks: some of these will be between 3 and 4 storeys; some will be between 5 and 7 storeys; and one will be 12 storeys.

    • 35% of these units will be affordable and 65% will be private housing.

  • Public Spaces: The Trust are currently proposing to develop the public spaces at the site, including:

    • Building a selection of new amenities, such as retail outlets, workshops, offices, restaurants and cafes.

    • Creating gardens and open spaces. This will include a central square, and a heritage garden.

    • Turning the existing golf course into a park so it is opened up to the public. It may include exercise facilities and children’s play areas.

    • The potential for a new primary school to be opened.

  • Transport: The Trust plans currently include:

    • Improving the links to the surrounding street network.

    • Providing car-parking spaces on-site, in the region of 1500.

    • Improving pedestrian and cycle access to the site and providing safe cycle facilities.

    • Building bus bays and potentially creating a new bus route.

  • New Health Care Facilities: Springfield Hospital provides excellent care to its patients but the buildings are rather outdated for their purpose. The Trust have proposed to develop the health care facilities by:

    • 26,000-32,000 Square metres of new state-of- the-art health facilities (this is roughly the same size as the existing hospital).

    • 160 older adult care units.

    • The potential for a primary health care facility such as a GP surgery.

The impact:

Although these plans could hold significant benefits for our community - for example the creation of dynamic community spaces and heritage sites - there could be considerable downsides. Such a serious development will inevitably have an impact on the surrounding area and community, not least because an additional 1400 households will ultimately move into the area. This will clearly have an impact on traffic, the environment and local amenities. Also, the building works are likely to take a number of years.

Have your Say:

I am keen that the developers are fully aware of the views of local residents before they finalise their plans. I am also determined that Wandsworth Council, who will ultimately decide whether these plans are given permission, know our views before any decision is taken. Once approval has been given, the development will begin and there will be nothing we can do about it!

Please do take the time to complete the enclosed survey to let me know what you think about these plans. This will allow me to really understand the views and concerns of local residents so I can represent these views to the Trust and, when a planning application is made, to the Council.
