Tidy up
Tooting
Sadiq recently joined up with Tooting's very own 'Big Tidy
Up' group and Cllr Andy Gibbons to clean up an alley near
Bickley Street/Mitcham Road in Graveney Ward.
The group was formed by local
residents who were annoyed at the way some areas of Tooting
seem to go for months without cleaning or rubbish
collection. They are tired of being shown little regard by the Council,
which seems to think that it’s ok to wade through ankle-deep
rubbish, or put up with constant fly-tipping in their
streets. They want to show everyone in Tooting that much more can – and should – be done to clean up
Tooting.
The
group arrived at the site at 12:15 and with so many people
helping had finished by 1 o'clock, an hour earlier than
anticipated.
The group
managed to fill 36 rubbish bags and 10 recycling bags as
well as unearthing two fridges, a toilet, a TV, 3 car number
plates, a couple of tyres and a heap of tiles, wood,
plasterboard and other debris.
Sadiq was then really
pleased that the group
went on a walk round the local area picking up rubbish along
the way, filling a further 3 rubbish bags and 3 recycling
bags with litter.

How can we Tidy
Up Tooting?
This is the action we believe the Council
should be taking to improve the cleanliness of Tooting
streets and the quality of life of Tooting residents:
-
First
and foremost, we need to have more frequent street
cleaning
-
Review
and target cleaning on a regular basis to concentrate on
the worst areas
-
Abolish
charges for the removal of bulky items and garden waste
to reduce incidents of fly tipping
-
Introduce town centre pavement washing and chewing gum
removal to rid the streets of grime and dirt
-
Begin a
doorstep organic waste collection service to increase
recycling levels
-
Enforce
zero tolerance of fly tipping by making full use of the
powers under the Government’s Cleaner Neighbourhood Act,
including fining and prosecuting fly-tippers.
-
Use CCTV
more effectively to catch fly tippers
-
Co-ordinate street cleaners and traffic wardens for the
most effective reporting of fly-tipping
-
Pro-active installation of gates on alleyways to reduce
incidences of fly-tipping and to tackle anti-social
behaviour
It is important that incidences on
fly-tipping and uncollected rubbish are reported. Here is
