Sadiq's Safer Stations Campaign Pays Off

His campaign first began after the tragic death of Thomas ap Rhys Price in North London. Similar fears were raised by local residents and so Sadiq began a campaign with other MPs for safer stations across London.

Balham, Tooting Bec, and Tooting Broadway Stations (which are the three stations in Tooting constituency) have now gained accreditation under the Secure Stations Scheme.

As part of Sadiq’s campaign he met with Tim O’Toole, Managing Director of Transport for London and brought Mike Brown, the Chief Operating Officer of the Northern Line to Tooting Broadway so Sadiq could show him in person what needed to be done.

Amongst the things Sadiq has been campaigning for were better lighting, more CCTV, more staffing and also tougher safety standards for rail franchise agreements.

After lots of hard work, many of these small but important improvements were made. Collectively they have made a real difference to local people who use these stations every day.

The Safer Stations Scheme covers all rail and underground networks which are policed by the British Transport Police. To gain accreditation, the Stations have to meet stringent standards concerning safety and security. The Stations have to meet established standards of best practice and coordinate action with the British Transport Police and local partners to implement security measures.

Sadiq said “I would like to congratulate all the staff involved in the improvement of the safety and security standards of these stations.

“The important thing about the accreditation is that crime statistics over the last twelve months have been taken into account prior to awarding accreditation and users of the underground locally have also been surveyed.

“I am delighted that my campaign has been a success.

“Everyone using railway stations should feel a lot safer and secure, and these awards show that TFL are as concerned as I am about these issues, and are ready to take the necessary action.

“Safety and security on public transport are of particular concern to me and to local residents.

“A safe and efficient transport system is imperative as a means to persuade the public to switch to public transport, which is one more step in the right direction in the fight against climate change.”
