229 stations in Greater London
are either unmanned throughout the day or from the early
evening onwards.
Leaving stations un-staffed fosters crime and the fear of
crime, and making our stations safer has to be a top
priority for the rail industry.
Dawn Butler MP recently launched
a campaign for Safer Stations in London and
this has been picked up by the Evening Standard. You can
sign their petition online
here.
Significant
steps have already been taken, including large investments
in transport police - 24% in the last year and increased
numbers of British Transport Police at London Underground
and mainline stations (by 50% over the last two years). On
15th February, the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone,
announced that his budget for 2006/07 includes funding for
an additional 89 British Transport Police to cover London.
However, more action is
urgently needed, in particular:
We will continue to campaign for
these measures, and work with the Police, the Mayor of
London and the train operaters to deliver better safety for
rail passengers.
