MP criticises council for cutting services instead of top pay

Freedom of Information requests made by Tooting MP Sadiq Khan have revealed that Wandsworth Council now employs more staff on salaries of over £100,000 and £150,000 than they did back in 2009.

This has emerged at the same time as reports from the TaxPayers’ Alliance revealed that Wandsworth Council has 33 employees receiving remuneration of more than £100,000 –the 3rd highest of all local authorities in the UK! The TaxPayers’ Alliance also exposed that there were more council employees earning over £100,000 in 2011-12 than there were in 2010-11.

As pay at the top has increased, Wandsworth Council have slashed funding for our lollipop ladies and men, cut the much-valued Meals on Wheels service and pledged to close our One O Clock Clubs. The council has also voted to increase council tax this year, despite objections from Labour Councillors.

In the face of increased council tax and the loss of services, Sadiq is asking how the council can justify these astonishing levels of executive pay.

Sadiq Khan MP said,

“The last year has seen the council cutting vital services more than ever, and so Wandsworth residents will be concerned to learn that this has happened at the same time as top pay has been increased.

“The people of Wandsworth have a right to know how these wages can be justified. With the council providing fewer and fewer services, how can wages be going up?

“My constituents are really feeling the pinch right now – the cost of living is going up, welfare is being cut, council tax bills have been increased, and the council is cutting services instead of top pay!”
