The news this week has focused on the ongoing Eurozone debt crisis and the jump in unemployment figures to a new high of 2.62 million. Youth unemployment has risen above the 1 million for the first time. In Tooting youth unemployment is 11% higher than it was 12 months ago, and overall unemployment is up 8.6% over the same period, and there are 18 people chasing every job.
We need a new plan now. A strategy for jobs, that will get young people into work, help families who have been squeezed by January’s VAT increase, and employers who cannot afford to take on new workers.
The government needs to change course, and quickly. The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, has outlined how he thinks it should be done, you can read about it here. What do you think?
