Local MP Sadiq Khan has called on Wandsworth Council to add The Wheatsheaf pub, as well as other much-loved local landmarks to their ‘Local List’.
With the future of The Wheatsheaf pub in Tooting Bec still under threat from a supermarket take over, Sadiq Khan has urged local councillors to add the popular pub to the Council’s ‘Local List’. This is not quite the same as a ‘listed building’, but the award does carry significant weight when it comes to the planning process.
The Tooting MP has been campaigning with local residents and pub lovers to save the pub from a supermarket take over since July. So far, campaigners have ruled out a Tesco take over, as well as receiving reassurances from other supermarket giants Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose and the Co-operative that they would keep their hands off The Wheatsheaf. Sadiq Khan also secured reassurances from owners of the pub, Enterprise Inns, that they have no plans to sell the pub.
Inspired by the campaign to save The Wheatsheaf, Sadiq Khan invited his constituents to make other suggestions to be protected and added to the ‘Local List’. As a result, Sadiq has called for the following buildings to be added to the list: Tooting Market, Tooting Lido, St Benedict’s Clock Tower, the Edward VII statute outside Tooting Broadway tube, Tooting Leisure Centre, Tooting Police Station, Tooting Library, the King’s Head public house and Defoe Chapel.
The Strategic Planning and Transportation Committee are expected to consider making additions to the ‘Local List’ at their meeting in the Town Hall tonight.
Sadiq Khan MP said,
“With the future of The Wheatsheaf still uncertain, I am determined to use every tool available to protect the pub. Although this is not a cast-iron solution, it will help protect the pub should it face redevelopment.
“Campaigning to save The Wheatsheaf over the last two months has shown us that so many of our much-loved landmarks are at risk of redevelopment. That is why I asked local residents to send me their suggestions for other local landmarks that they would like to see protected.
“I hope the Council will use this opportunity to recognise the historical significance of The Wheatsheaf, and how popular it is, as well as Tooting Lido, the police station and many other local landmarks, and show their commitment to protecting these buildings for future generations.”
