Sadiq celebrates local community organisations in Parliament

Over forty local organisations and charities attended a ‘community celebration’ reception in the Houses of Parliament, hosted by the MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan.

Organisations present included Furzedown Annual Charity Events, South London Swimming Club, Tara Arts, representatives from local mosques, temples and churches, the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA), Wandsworth Foodbank and Ronald McDonald House.

Much-valued local groups and their dedicated volunteers were welcomed to Parliament, and thanked by Sadiq Khan for the important work that they do to support the people of Tooting, and for making Tooting an even better place to live. Organisations were encouraged to network and to build connections with groups they can work together with in the future. Guests were also treated to a tour of Parliament.

Speakers at the event included St George’s CEO Miles Scott, Graveney Councillor Rex Osborn and Kate Allen from BATCA.

Sadiq Khan MP said;

“This is the first time we have ever had so many locally-based community organisations, and their volunteers, together in one room, and what a success it has been! The strength of the community spirit we have in Tooting really shone through.

“It is incredibly important to thank local organisations, such as Wandsworth Carers Association, the Prince’s Trust, Wandsworth Foodbank, and many, many more, who are the backbone of our community. I will continue to work hard to champion their efforts and support their work.

“I hope that following this event, the organisations have made lots of useful connections with other groups whose work compliments their own, or with who they can share new ideas. After all, we can build a much stronger community if we work together, than we could ever do apart.”

Organisations who attended the event said....

"What a smashing event. It has been valuable to make so many great connections, but most importantly it has been really special to experience the community spirit amongst all these different local organisations, in one place.”

Jeanette Hill, Manager of Ronald McDonald House

“I was gobsmacked by the number of local organisations who attended the event, who are all working hard to support our community. The evening has really shown how we can develop what we do as an organisation, I’ve already arranged to meet up with 4 organisations and identified so many more that we’re possibly going to support. I would like to say a big thank you for Sadiq Khan for bringing us all together.”

Alan Feast, from Furzedown Annual Charity Events

"Just a quick thank you from all of us who came from the South London Swimming Club for the event last night - it was great fun and lovely to see how many community organisations there are in Tooting."

Sue Rentoul, South London Swimming Club

"We were delighted to be present and very much enjoyed the relaxed nature of the event, the chance to meet others in the community, and to watch speeches delivered whilst balancing on chairs!"

Noel Cramer, Director of Fundraising at St George's Hospital

"I would like to thank Sadiq and all his staff for the excellent event yesterday.  It was very good to meet up with other community groups and to learn about them."
