Warm Front is a Government scheme which offers a package of heating and insulation measures of up to £3,500 (or £6,000 where oil central heating or other alternative technologies are recommended). It provides help for people on certain income-related benefits.
New figures obtained this week reveal that because of Government budget mismanagement, over half the money set aside for this year’s Warm Front Scheme is predicted to remain unspent when the scheme closes on 19 January 2013.
The revelation comes at a time when the average energy bill has hit a new record high of £1400, and the Government’s own fuel poverty advisers are warning that an extra 300,000 people could be pushed into fuel poverty this winter. Tooting MP, Sadiq Khan has called on the Government to extend the scheme until the full budget has been spent.
In data released by the Department of Energy and Climate change it has been revealed that in the last year only 12 houses in Sadiq’s constituency received support from the Government scheme, with the average granted being £177.52 – compared with the average grant of £1,099.41 in Battersea!
Sadiq regularly holds Warm Front events to encourage people to sign up to the scheme.

Sadiq Khan MP said:
“The weather is getting really cold now and it is outrageous that many people are going to be cold in their own homes when they could have had Government help to prevent it.
“I regularly hold Warm Front events to encourage people to sign up to the scheme. The Government should be doing much more, especially in Tooting where so few people have received the help locally.
“It is not too late for people to sign up, although the scheme does close for Winter on Saturday!”
