Sadiq's column in the Wandsworth Guardian, 19/12/14

Picking the highlight of my week is tough this week, with so much going on in our local community. We saw history made by the first ever visit of the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow MP, to Tooting! Students from all of our sixth forms and colleges, Graveney, Chestnut Grove, Burntwood and South Thames College, joined us at my old school, Ernest Bevin College, to hear from Mr Speaker, who faced more of a grilling than he sees every week at PMQ’s. And then it was off to Ravenstone Primary School, to announce the winner of my annual Christmas card competition. Out of hundreds of entries from schools across the local area, I am pleased to announce that the winner was nine year old Dylan Braganza Fitzpatrick, whose brilliant snowball design now features on the front of my card which will be sent to thousands of people across Tooting and beyond.

Speaking of Christmas, it’s that time of year when lots of us will be on the lookout for that perfect gift for friends and family. And what better place to find it than some of our great small businesses? Like many local residents, this Saturday I was on our high streets showing my support for Small Business Saturday. From Taborn’s luggage shop, to Fisher & Co café, from Patel Brothers to Pooja Sweets, there are so many businesses to be proud of, and I would encourage Wandsworth Guardian readers to pay them a visit.

This week I also stopped by St George’s Hospital, to join my good friends from the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA) as they handed over a cheque for £2,700, to the hospital charity. Speaking of charity, as we approach the Christmas period, more than ever, charities need people to lend a helping hand. This week, I’ve launched #LondonCalling – a campaign to get Londoners volunteering in their local area. If you can spare some time this Christmas, find out more at www.londoncallinglondoners.com.

This is just an idea of what I get up to as your MP, but if you would like to hear more you can always follow me on twitter @SadiqKhan, or sign up for my weekly updates by visiting www.sadiqkhan.org.uk/enews

Lastly, I would like to wish all Wandsworth Guardian readers, and your families, a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. However you choose to spend the holidays, I hope they are filled with peace and happiness.
