Happy New Year Wandsworth Guardian readers!

It’s been a hectic start to the New Year, with lots of big changes ahead for Wandsworth residents.

Tooting and Earlsfield residents will be aware of the ongoing consultation on AFC Wimbledon’s plans to return to Plough Lane. As the planning application will be decided by Merton Council, there have been concerns raised that the views of Wandsworth residents will count for less. But after raising this with Merton, I’m pleased to report that I have secured a commitment that they will consider your submissions as seriously as if they were from Merton residents. They’ve also agreed to push the consultation deadline back to 2nd February, to give you more time to respond. I hope that offers Wandsworth Guardian readers some relief. You can read my submission on behalf of my constituents at

Wandsworth Council are also holding a public meeting on 2nd February, at Burntwood School at 7pm. If you have questions or concerns, please do go along.

There are also ongoing consultations on both Crossrail 2 and the redevelopment of the Springfield Hospital site. As the local MP I have studied these very carefully, and share a number of local concerns with both proposals. It is important that those residents who live nearby take part in the consultations, and I will be raising your grievances too. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to email me at if you would like to discuss any of the big changes facing our area.

Lastly, I would like to end my column by mentioning an event I hosted this month in the State Rooms of the Speaker’s House. John Bercow, the Speaker, kindly allowed me to use his State Rooms to bring together over 60 Wandsworth-based community and charity organisations; to celebrate our ‘Community Heroes’. It was a real pleasure to bring almost 200 local  community-minded people together, to thank them for all their hard work, and the very important role they play in making Wandsworth the best place to live! Visit to find out more.
