This week, as the Government announced a fall in the unemployment rate, Sadiq Khan has revealed that long term unemployment in Tooting has actually risen by a staggering 25% and long term youth unemployment has almost doubled – by 89% in the last year.
As the local MP Sadiq has worked hard to address unemployment locally. In August 2012 he hosted a jobs fair aimed at providing advice with drafting CVs, completing job applications and performance at interviews to help get people back into work. Hundreds of people attended the event held at South Thames College.
Sadiq is calling on the Government to address this now.
Sadiq Khan MP said,
“These figures are disgraceful. This Government is hiding huge increases in long term unemployment behind their announcements this week. I have worked hard to address unemployment in Tooting, but it is about time this Tory-led Government did more to address the problem.
“The young and long term unemployed in Tooting need the Government to introduce a back to work programme that actually works.
“These figures show that the Government is failing young people in Tooting. Action is needed now or we will have a lost generation, as there was when I was growing up locally in the 1980's."
