I have some BIG news to share with you. Not only has our community campaign to save The Wheatsheaf saved our pub, but it has helped make history too.
Today the government have been persuaded to announce more robust protection for pubs across the country – and guess where they came to make the announcement? Outside our very own Tooting Bec pub, following the nationally recognised campaign we ran to save it.
Those of you involved with the campaign will know what a lengthy process it was, securing planning protection for the Wheatsheaf. It was much longer than it needed to be – especially given the level of local support for it. At long last the government have acknowledged that the system wasn’t working, and that much-loved pubs were being lost in the process. The new changes mean more power for local residents, and a simpler, more streamlined process for saving pubs and other valued community spaces.
As Parliament comes to a close this week ahead of the general election, I would like to thank you for all your support in helping to save the Wheatsheaf. After almost two years of community campaigning, we should all be extremely proud of the role we have played in not just saving our local, but changing the law to protect pubs for future generations – now there’s a story to tell in the pub!
