This weekend a Green Plaque was unveiled on Hazelhurst Road, Tooting, to remember the 35 people killed by a V2 bomb in 1944. The campaign was led by Summerstown 182's Geoff Simmons. Sadiq helped campaingers secure the plaque and was invited to the ceremony to read a letter written by one of the residents killed by the bomb.
Sadiq Khan MP said:
"Over seventy years since the V2 bomb landed on Hazelhurst Road, I am pleased to have been able to help the local community secure this plaque in the memory of those who lost their lives.
"It was amazing to see over two hundred local residents attend the unveiling of the plaque, for what was a very moving ceremony. It was also good to meet those who had survived the bomb, as well as relatives of those who had been killed, and hear their stories.
"On behalf of Tooting I would like to extend a very special thank you to Geoff Simmons and the Summerstown 182 project, who led the campaign for the plaque and continue to help our community to remember the local people who lost their lives during the two world wars. Keep up the fantastic work Geoff."
